#197James B. Connolly, an American runner, became the first Olympics winner in modern times---competing in an event for which he had not even trained. No American had entered the hop, step, and jump contest, which was the first event when the Olympics were revived in Athens in 1896. Connolly volunteered to compete and won with a mark of 45 feet.
