Dismalus was the latest figure to arrive at Hades. Charon, the ferryman across the River Styx, threw questions at him hard and fast as he made his way across. "You threw the javelin for Sparta, yes?" and... "Did Runacoris finish the marathon yesterday? and... so on. By the time they reached the other side and Dismalus stepped off, for eternity, he paused and asked, "Why do you ask so many questions of me? I understand the thirst for knowledge, but these are all mere contemporary gossip."

Replied Charon, "Eventually the news is delivered down here. But we're the last stop on the mail route. News becomes history, but gossip gets stale. It's what happens when you live so far out in the Styx."
